SNAP — Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
Monthly food benefits on an EBT card you can use at grocery stores and some farmers markets.
What you get
A monthly benefit loaded onto an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card. For FY 2027, the maximum monthly allotment for a household of 4 in the 48 contiguous states is $1,023. Most households receive less than the maximum because benefits are reduced by 30 cents for every dollar of net income.
Who qualifies
- Household gross income at or below 130% of the federal poverty level ($3,383/month for a family of 4 in FY 2027)
- Net income (after deductions) at or below 100% of poverty
- Most non-citizen immigrants are not eligible; lawful permanent residents may qualify after 5 years
- Adults 18–64 without dependents must meet work requirements (80 hours/month) in most states
How to apply
Apply through your state's SNAP office — online, in person, or by phone. Find your state's portal at USDA state directory. You will need proof of income, identity, and address. Most decisions within 30 days; expedited benefits within 7 days for very low-income households.
