CHIP — Children's Health Insurance Program

Free or low-cost health coverage for children whose families earn too much for Medicaid but can't afford private insurance.

Who qualifies

Children under 19 in families with income up to 200–400% of the federal poverty level (varies by state — most states cover up to at least 200% FPL). Some states also cover pregnant people under CHIP. Children must be uninsured, US citizens or eligible immigrants, and state residents.

What CHIP covers

Doctor visits, immunizations, hospital care, dental, vision, hearing, prescriptions, mental health services, and emergency care. Some states charge small premiums (under $50/year for families below 150% FPL). Co-payments are minimal.

How to apply

Apply through your state's Medicaid/CHIP agency or at HealthCare.gov — the application screens for both Medicaid and CHIP simultaneously. There is no enrollment period; you can apply year-round.
