LIHEAP — help with heating and cooling bills
Who qualifies, what it covers, and how to apply.
What is LIHEAP?
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps low-income households pay for heating and cooling costs. It is federally funded but run by states, territories, and some tribes. It can pay part of your utility bill, help prevent a utility shutoff, or fund emergency assistance in a crisis.
Who qualifies?
Income limits are set by each state, up to 150% of the federal poverty level or 60% of state median income (whichever is higher). Priority is given to households with a member who is elderly (60+), disabled, or under 6 years old. If you already receive SNAP, SSI, or TANF, you are often automatically income-eligible.
What does it cover?
- Heating assistance (main benefit in most states): help paying winter energy bills
- Cooling assistance: help with summer electric bills or window AC units in some states
- Crisis assistance: emergency help if your heat or power is about to be shut off
- Weatherization referrals: some programs connect you to insulation and efficiency upgrades
How to apply
LIHEAP opens at different times in different states — heating assistance often opens in the fall (September–October). Apply as early as possible; funds run out each year. Find your state's LIHEAP office at liheapch.acf.hhs.gov or through your local community action agency.
LIHEAP is first-come, first-served in most states. Don't wait until your heat is cut off — apply at the start of the season.
